History

The area has been inhabited since approximately 12.000BC. The first religious building was build in the 12th century. From the 13th century, Waalre was an administrative unity with Valkenswaard. In the 18th century, the other unity split up. In the 20th century, Waalre developed itself as a village center, with agricultural buildings. Under the influence of Eindhoven, the village developed villa’s, therefore it got the nickname “de Goudkust”, which can be translated as the Golden Coast.

Some activities can be undertaken in the community:

  • The area has more than a few dozen monuments to visit.
  • Many churches can be found in the area, some a few centuries old.
  • The museum “Het Waalres Museum” can be visited as well. It exhibits information about Waalre, antiques, and modern art of regional artists. Also, they host readings.
  • The area has a richness of natural beauty. Such as forests and small lakes, and the Dommeldal.

Fun fact

  • Waalre is sometimes also called the “Goudkust” (Gold Coast), due to having many villas and it’s relation to Eindhoven.
