History

The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times. The industrial revolution brought increasing prosperity to the region. Due to the construction of a provincial road between Eindhoven and Turnhout, many weaving companies and stone factories established in the region in the 19th century. Circa 1900AD, the cigar industry increased because it was fairly simple to set up a factory. In 1921AD the community was formed by uniting several smaller municipalities.

Many things can be undertaken in the community:

  • To the west of Veldhoven the landscape predominantly exists out of agriculture.
  • At the hamlet Halfmijl prehistoric burial mounds can be found.
  • The Molenvelden is a woodland area characterized by beeches. The name stems from a windmill that stood in the area between 1360AD and 1914AD. The remains can still be found.
  • Also, other natural areas can be found throughout the surroundings.
  • For anyone interested in the regional people, there is Museum ‘t Oude Slot. It is devoted to  Kempense Ethnology.
  • Some beautiful monumental buildings, churches, and windmills can be found, such as the Trapjeshuis, with special stairs. Also think of visiting the Zandoerle, a century-old hamlet with cultural-historic value.
  • There is a zoo to be found that focusses primarily on parrots.
  • Veldhoven also has a cinema and theater to visit.

Fun facts

  • The name was first decided to indicate a trivial hamlet.
  • Veldhoven is called “Rommelgat” during “Carnaval”.
