History

The area has been inhabited since prehistoric times. For a long time, the area was predominantly agricultural. Interestingly, Gemert has been part of a German knight order, which led to a conflict in 1270AD. In the nineteenth century, Gemert became an independent community. Gemert owned a big portion of the textile industry which led to economic growth. The community came into existence in 1997AD, when former municipalities Gemert, Bakel and Milheeze united.

Several things can be undertaken in the area:

  • Several monuments and a castle can be visited.
  • The area hosts multiple churches that can be visited.
  • Also, a few museums can be found, such as the “Streekmuseum”
  • The area has many sports clubs, especially for football/soccer, but also basketball, hockey, and other sports.
  • As in all of the Greenzone of Eindhoven, the area consists of many green areas, such as forests and protected nature areas.
  • Multiple windmills can be found in the area.
