The pearl of the Kempen is how the community of Eersel is referred to, proudly confirmed by its inhabitants. Eersel is situated in the middle of a wooded area in the Kempen of Noord-Brabant (province of The Netherlands). The Belgian border is only 8 km away, and thanks to the nearby A67 motorway, Eersel is easily accessible. It is a very pleasant place, surrounded by the 152 km long route of the Kempen conservation area. The center of Eersel, with its historical buildings and intimate terraces, has been a protected cityscape for over 40 years. The community of Eersel consists of six towns; Duizel, Eersel, Knegsel, Steensel, Vessem, and Wintelre.

Nature in Eersel
The community of Eersel is situated on the outskirts of the buzzing city of Eindhoven and is filled with forests and moorland, including the ‘Landschotse Heide’ and the ‘Cartierheide’, a 390 acre conservation area where passionate nature lovers can easily unwind and explore. Widely spread forests, colorful moorlands, winding creeks and lengthy tracks will take you through the Belgian borderland. The ‘Buikheide’ is situated on the north-eastern side of Vessel, and consists of the ‘Groot- en Kleinmeer’ conservation area, which is truly gorgeous, as well as the area of ‘Kleine Beerze’. In all these conservation areas you’ll find sign-posted hiking courses with a total length of 1500 km. It’s not surprising that the community of Eersel has been commended as the hiking community of The Netherlands in 2014. Hiking in the area of Eersel is not just hiking, it’s adventuring. How about some geocaching with only GPS coordinates to get you around Steensel, in a quest to find real treasure? Four tracks, specially developed for exploring can be found in Vessem, where you can discover many remarkable sights and activities.
History in Eersel
Amongst the community of Eersel, there are the many Bronze Age barrows located in Knegsel and church towers (including the 13th Century semi-detached brick tower in Steensel and the church tower in Steensel dating back to the 14th Century). In the town of Wintelre, two lions guard the town’s church. The former town hall of Vessem is of great historical value, due to its remarkable architecture (‘Boss School’) and its location. The ‘Jacobus Bergkorenmolen’ in Vessem, a historical mill build in 1893, is still in operation and is open for the public. The historical center of Eersel which is home to multiple ancient buildings and intimate terraces has been a protected cityscape for over 40 years.
In the community of Eersel, you can find many monumental farmsteads, which are protected national monuments. An example of one of these is the ‘Jacobushoeve’ in Vessem. From this location, pilgrims set off for Santiago de Compostella. The main function of the ‘Jacobushoeve’ is to stimulate encounters between people of the center. Each year this pilgrim farmstead attracts around 50,000 visitors. In Vessem, you can also find another pilgrim farmstead, called the ‘Kafarnaüm’, where pilgrims can spend the night.
The regional cultural-historical museum in Eersel, ‘De Acht Zaligheden’, provides a clear portrayal of what life was like on the farm in the period of 1850 until 1950, in the Kempen region.
Entertainment in Eersel
Despite not being closely situated near to the sea, a day at the beach is still possible in Eersel! Young or old, active or less active, everyone can enjoy and relax at the E3-beach or ‘Sterrenstrand’ beach, at the Ter Spegelt camping site.
The numerous sports and music clubs host many annual activities and events in Eersel. These events attract a lot of people, including the musical event ‘Music on Payday’, ‘Krankjorum Musical Festival’, the equestrian event ‘Eersel-Postel Rally’ or the tourist Market Days. The latter has been organized annually for the last 25 years and provides spectacular street theater combined with many market stalls. The ‘Eersel-Postel Rally’ has been a local tradition for over 50 years and takes place every 2nd Sunday in October. Many spectators watch the rally in which 200 equestrians and 110 participants race against each other in carriages.
