History

Recent excavations showed that the area was already inhabited in 1700BC. It is assumed hunters and gatherers already roamed the area since a long time before. Initially, Best had an agricultural economy, later this changed to an industrial economy due to different companies settling in. The industry was predominantly involved with the production of the typically Dutch clogs because the area was rich of the trees that provide the right type of wood. Later, more international companies settled in the area, such as Philips Medical Systems, sparking a growth of the region.

Several things can be undertaken in the area:

Visit one of the many churches in the area. Some are over 500 years old.

The area has several monuments, ranging from municipal monuments to war monuments.
Visit a museum, for example, “Bevrijdende Vleugels” (Wings of Freedom) in the forests, it shows many military vehicles spread over a big terrain. Or “De Platijn”, a clog museum, in which clogs are still produced.
Best has multiple sports clubs to join.
Enjoy the nature! The area hosts multiple forests as well as other nature.

Fun facts:

The village of Best is called “Klompengat” in the annual celebration of “Carnaval”. This accounts to the area’s former significance in producing clogs, as “Klompengat” can be translated as “clog hole”
